Humane Society

The Humane Society. Most people think that is an umbrella term for any shelter-type organization. Additionally, you may think the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is the head of all the local humane societies. This, as it turns out, is not the case.
Humane Societies it seems are not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States. Your local humane shelter is an independent entity that likely has vastly different perspectives about animals than the HSUS.
Some local humane groups are now starting to show their independent status with name changes. I would expect that most will seek names to reflect local areas and to emphasize the promotion of animal-human bonds, prevention of cruelty and elevating the overall care of animals.

Look here to see how HSUS spends their money.
